According to the surveillance of the seawater quality on beaches for recreational use, located in 76 tourist destinations of the 17 coastal states of Mexico, 283, that is, the 98% of the 289 beaches sampled are suitable for recreational use reported the Ministry of Health of the Government of Mexico, through the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris).
Nevertheless, six beaches of four tourist destinations exceeded the enterococci levels that they must have per 100 milliliters of water, which implies a health risk for the population that could suffer damage to health if exposed to its waters.

Cofepristhrough the APCRS, requested the beach committees of each entity to carry out the pertinent signs that inform the population that the six beaches mentioned above, They are not suitable for recreational use.
Once the beach committees carry out the relevant actions that allow recovering the water quality of the beaches so that they are suitable for recreational use, they will inform and/or disseminate it through the mechanism they determine.
Cofepris explained that in accordance with the World Health Organization (WHO)the Ministry of Health through the PSeawater Monitoring Program for Recreational Use monitors the presence of the bacteria Enterococcus faecalis and establishes that beaches that yield results above 200 enterococci per 100 milliliters of water They imply a health risk for the population since exposure could make them sick.
The regulatory agency detailed that this bacteria is very resistant to adverse conditions and due to its characteristics it can develop in an environment with 6.5% sodium chloride, pH of 9.6 and between 10° and 45° Centigrade.
