A company was caught making and selling unlicensed thermometers as medical devices.

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced on the 23rd that it had sent the CEO of Company A, who manufactured and sold thermometers that were not approved (certified) as medical devices, to the prosecution on charges of violating the Medical Device Act.

Company A imported thermometer cases and electronic boards from China from November 2020 to September 2022, assembled and packaged them.

The company manufactured 1,072 unlicensed thermometers using this method. Of these, 996 were sold online and offline, making a sales profit of about 35 million won.

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety confiscated the remaining 76 thermometers during an on-site investigation.

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety said, “Do not use this thermometer as it may be difficult to accurately measure body temperature as it is not approved as a medical device,” and added, “When purchasing a thermometer, check the ‘medical device’ mark and the ‘medical device item approval number’ written on the product packaging. “We must do it,” he urged.
