An American-French satellite that will map most of the world’s waters has been put into orbit. The launch from Vandenberg Space Station in California capped off a very successful year for NASA. The satellite will conduct the first global survey of its kind. In addition to oceans and seas, it will measure the height and flow of water in millions of lakes and over 1 million kilometers of rivers. Scientists say measurements are needed more than ever as climate change exacerbates droughts, floods and coastal erosion. Control centers in California and France cheered as the spacecraft’s mission began.
