Kambham: As the price continues to fall, the farmers are facing difficulties due to affordable price even for the production cost of cardamom.

India occupies a leading position in the cultivation of cardamom at the international level. Although Guatemala competes with India, India is ahead in terms of quality. Therefore, Gulf countries and Middle East countries like to buy Indian cardamom. Cardamom is cultivated on 2 lakh acres in Idukki district alone.

Like other agricultural commodities, cardamom cannot be sold at will. Auctions conducted by Spices Board licensed auction houses will be purchased by registered and licensed traders.

There is no direct contact between traders and farmers. The auction houses have to make the payment.

After 2019, the price of cardamom started falling. The average price then was Rs.7 thousand per kg. 2019 was the highest price in the history of cardamom trade. The price has also decreased since the start of the corona virus. At present the situation is unaffordable even for the cost of production. Traders and farmers opinion about this

Awareness is needed

Vinayamurthy, Exporter, K. Budhupatti: Cardamom was exported last year at 10,200 tonnes. This year is less. Exports to Middle East countries like Iran, Iraq, Jordan etc. Countries like Saudi, Kuwait did not buy much due to the effect of pesticides. Before you get paid immediately after exporting.

It’s now been a month since the delivery. Similarly, dealers take 30 days for delivery.

This reduces sales. Internationally only Gulf and Middle Eastern countries use cardamom. Countries all over the world should take steps to use cardamom to change that situation. Doing so will increase exports. Similarly, there is significant usage only in northern states of India.

The Spices Board should take action in international countries and India through awareness campaigns to fix the local market and use cardamom for everyone. Auction houses can also participate if required.

This year the yield will be less, but there will be no damage. The reason is that the cultivated area has increased.

Board procurement

Arunprasad, auction farmer: It costs Rs 3 lakh per acre. A yield of 300 kg and a price of Rs.1200 per kg would be correct. But if the yield is reduced and the price is below Rs.900 then how can the farmers cultivate. What can be done with conditions like increase in price of fertilizer, pesticides, increase in labor wages, low yield due to natural disasters.

The only solution is for the Spices Board to make direct purchases and take steps to ensure affordable prices.

Kambam: Due to the continuous fall in the price, the farmers are facing difficulties due to the affordable price even for the production cost of cardamom.
Buying a house in Chennai is the dream of many middle-class people. But it is no easy task.
