Rohingya refugees detained in Jaffna prison have been taken to Meerikana detention camp.

104 Rohingya refugees who were in Jaffna Jail were taken to Meerikana Detention Camp by three buses today at 06:00 AM on Thursday.

The Rohingya Muslims who were expelled from Myanmar were staying in a refugee camp in Bangladesh and were illegally traveling by boat to escape to Indonesia when the boat broke down in the North East coast of Jaffna.

The stranded people were rescued by the Sri Lankan Navy on the 17th and brought to Kangesanturai Naval Camp on the next day on the 18th, where they were kept after medical examinations.

Kangesanthurai police filed a case against 104 people who were illegally rescued in Sri Lankan waters and the person who helped the network that tried to illegally deport them.

On the 19th, Mallagam Court Judge Gayatri Sailavan, who went to the place where all 105 people were detained and conducted investigations, ordered all 104 people to get permission from the Department of Immigration and Emigration of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and ordered all the refugees to stay in Meerika detention camp.

In addition, he ordered that the person who tried to smuggle 104 people to a country be kept in judicial custody until the next 2nd.

After that, 105 people were detained in the Jaffna prison at 8 pm on the 19th.

In this case, one of the 105 remand prisoners has been detained in the Jaffna Jail and the other 104 have been taken to Merikana.
