Natural hangover remedies: do they really work?

by time news

Abusing alcohol takes its toll on our health. The most immediate is the one that occurs the next day: the dreaded hangover. The ideal way to avoid it is to moderate the consumption of alcohol, but, if you have already gone too far, hours later you will notice headache and dizziness, nausea, fatigue, sensitivity to light and sound, rapid heartbeat, depression, anxiety and irritability. Alcohol is a diuretic and causes dehydration, which is the cause of most of these symptoms. That’s why it’s important drink a lot of water.

From the Ministry of Health they warn that the remedies to “miraculously cure” hangovers are a myth. Recovery is usually just matter of time. Most disappear within 24 hours.

Popular hangover remedies include drinking fruit juices or honey, but there is very little scientific evidence to show that these measures work. Drink coffee, take a shower or have an alcoholic beverage the next morning they won’t cure a hangover either.

Sports drinks and soups are good for replenishing the salts and potassium lost from alcohol consumption.

It is also important get enough rest to aid recovery.

Although many are tempted to take a drug to relieve discomfort, it is recommended to avoid any medication that contains paracetamol, since it can cause liver damage when combined with alcohol. Similarly, certain over-the-counter pain relievers, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, they can increase the release of acid and irritate the lining of the stomach. Care should be taken when consuming these medications before or after drinking alcohol, warn the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIH).

The only infallible remedy for a hangover is to avoid it, either by consuming alcohol in moderation or by choosing not to drink at all.
