Aerial photos and videos posted on social media show the extent of the heavy damage. At least 200 cars, trucks and vans crashed into each other and piled up on the main road. Other viral videos posted online after the accident showed the mangled remains of several vehicles that collided with others.

Rescue efforts by the emergency forces that arrived at the scene were carried out shortly after the accident occurred, and the scene was already cleared of cars at this stage when traffic was released. Such accidents are relatively common in China, due to the lack of strict safety controls. Just last September, 27 people died after a bus transporting them to quarantine facilities in southwestern Guizhou province overturned on a highway.
