Israel’s ambassador to France, Yael German, announced today her resignation from her position in protest of the establishment of Netanyahu’s sixth government. German was appointed to the position by former Prime Minister Yair Lapid.
In a letter she answered to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, German wrote: “I was appointed ambassador by the outgoing Prime Minister Yair Lepi, and I was proud and happy to represent the world view of the outgoing government.”
German went on to write: “The government that you established includes representatives of parties whose extreme positions are expressed in its fundamental lines, in its policies and in statements about legislation, is invalid in my view, which it intends to pass. This, in my opinion, endangers the character of the State of Israel and its values, as expressed in the Declaration of Independence, on which we were raised And we grew up, and it serves us as an identity card and a beacon.”
“Therefore, as mentioned, your policy, the statements of the ministers in your government and the intentions of the legislation are contrary to my conscience, to my worldview, and to the promises contained in the declaration of independence for a Jewish and democratic state.”
“Under these circumstances, I cannot lie in my mind and continue to represent a policy that is so radically different from everything I believe in, and therefore I find it appropriate to submit my resignation and end my position as Israel’s ambassador to France.”
