The UN General Assembly yesterday (Friday night) approved a request from the International Court of Justice in The Hague for a legal opinion of what it calls “Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories” when 87 countries voted in favor, 24 against and 53 abstained.
The proposed resolution promoted by the Palestinians will initiate a legal process by the International Court of Justice in The Hague, which will examine the situation in Judea and Samaria and East Jerusalem. It also states that Israeli presence in these areas is illegal and seeks to recommend measures against Israel following the “occupation”.
Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, who did not come to speak at the vote scheduled for Saturday evening, said: “No international body can decide that the Jewish people are ‘occupiers’ of their homeland. Any decision by a judicial body that receives its mandate from the bankrupt and politicized UN is completely illegitimate.”
The Palestinian representative to the UN, Riyad Mansour, referred to the vote against the background of the swearing-in of the government and said: “A new hard right-wing government that promises to expand the Jewish settlements and conduct a policy that has been criticized at home and abroad.”
In response, the Palestinians today welcomed the move and said in the Palestinian leadership: “The time has come for Israel to be a law-abiding state, and bear responsibility for its ongoing crimes against our people.”
