minimum wage. The amount of the minimum interprofessional growth wage was revalued on Sunday January 1, 2023. How does this increase translate into additional euros on your payslip?

[Mis à jour le 2 janvier 2023 à 13h15] Good news for employees paid the minimum interprofessional growth wage (Smic): its amount has been upgraded on January 1, 2023. It has in fact been increased by 1.81%. The gross monthly minimum wage thus passes the symbolic bar of 1,709.28 euros. Concretely, the net monthly salary is 1,353.07 euros for 35 hours per week, against 1,329 euros previously. An employee with a net monthly minimum wage will therefore see his salary increase by 24 euros compared to the end of 2022. In January 2016, the net monthly minimum wage was 1,143 euros. In seven years, it has increased by 210 euros.

Do not see there a gesture of the government to support the purchasing power of the most modest French employees. In fact, every year the Smic is mechanically revalued by decree on January 1, compared to the evolution of inflation observed in the 20% of French households with the lowest incomes. Moreover, when the inflation rate increases by at least 2%, the minimum wage is automatically raised in the same proportions. On January 1, 2022, the Smic had experienced a mechanical increase of 0.9%, before being increased again by 2.65% on May 1, then by 2.01% on August 1.

On the basis of a full-time job, 35 hours per week, an employee with the minimum wage earns 1,709.28 euros gross and 1,353.07 euros net (after mandatory deductions), for a net gain of 24 euros each month compared to August 2022, since Sunday January 1, 2023. The hourly rate of the Smic corresponds to the legal minimum hourly wage that the employee must receive. Deductions are however applicable in certain cases (apprentices and employees under 18). This is the amount paid for one hour of work. The monthly minimum wage is modeled on the basis of 35 hours per week.

The amount of the annual Smic is obtained by multiplying the amount of the monthly Smic (above) by the number of months of the year, i.e. 12. Please note, if you benefit from a 13th month paid to your employer, this is not part of the calculation of the annual minimum wage. Referring to the new amount of the Smic 2023 valid since January 1, 2023, the net annual Smic amounts to 16 236,84 euros (1353.07×12). For its part, the gross annual minimum wage climbs to 20 511,36 euros (1 709,28 x 12).
