Pele’s body was brought to the Santos Memorial Cemetery on Tuesday afternoon. The last rites were attended by family members and dignitaries. The dead body was brought as a mourning procession. While the procession was passing in front of the family house, the vehicle stopped for a while in front of the house. Pele’s mother lives here. They are bedridden due to age-related ailments.
Pele’s body was brought to Santos from Sao Paulo on Monday morning. Santos, where the star played for 18 years in his football career, had an opportunity for a public viewing at the club’s ground. Thousands participated in the 24-hour long public darshan. Tens of thousands gasped when they saw Pele’s body in a casket draped with the flags of Brazil and Santos FC.
Finally Santos bid him farewell. Pele, Brazil’s greatest player of all time and the only three-time World Cup winner, has faded into memory. The body was escorted by thousands to the memorial cemetery, which is only 600 meters away from Vila Belmiro Stadium. People’s representatives of Brazil also accompanied the mourning procession.
