In a long message that she published, Regev explained the sequence of events and wrote: “Last night during the clarification meeting – as the committee does with the ministers regarding the appointment of CEOs – the members of the committee clarified that they think that an old man deserves to be CEO of medium-sized offices.”

“After Minister Regev explained to them that he is the right and suitable man for her due to his professional and managerial experience, and his extensive familiarity with the Ministry of Transportation, there was an understanding that the committee would approve his appointment for a first period of six months in the position of CEO. This understanding took place in the presence of the Commission’s legal advisors, including conversations held with Mr. Gil Lemon from the legal advice to the government.”

Regev stated that she was “surprised this morning to find out that the members of the committee retracted their conclusion, and decided to prevent his appointment”. According to Regev: “Ben Zaken meets all the threshold conditions, he is a professional, experienced and worthy appointment. A minister in a government office wants to succeed and not fail, therefore the appointment of positions of trust is critical to success.”

Regev stated that “I respect the Commissioner, but the Appointments Committee is only a recommendation, so I do not accept her recommendation as they did in the previous government with the appointment of Amir Peretz. Officials, however senior they may be, cannot make decisions instead of an elected minister on who to appoint to the position of trust Her most senior.”

At the end of her remarks, Regev clarified that she “intends on Sunday to bring this worthy appointment to the approval of the Israeli government. A government that advocates and stated in the past that it came to govern and promote policies for which we were elected. This is an important test for all members of the government and I expect his appointment to be unanimously approved.”
