Chennai: Two members of the ruling party were arrested for sexually harassing a female police officer in uniform at a public meeting attended by DMK MP Kanimozhi.

DMK held a public meeting at Dasarathapuram, Saligramam, Chennai on the night of December 31. Kanimozhi and others participated in this.

Praveen, 23, and Ekambaram, 24, from DMK, sexually harassed an unmarried female police officer who was on security duty in uniform, using the crowd line.

Subsequently, the opposition parties raised their voice to take action against the violators of the ruling party. The woman also filed a complaint at Virugambakkam police station, seeking police action. Koyambedu Deputy Commissioner of Police questioned both the parties.

Then Praveen and Ekambaram received only letters of apology and they were released; The woman police also withdrew the complaint.

‘It was only because DMK, prominent figures threatened, that the concerned woman policeman backed down. In fact, he had no desire to withdraw the complaint. “We cannot take action against those who have laid hands on the police,” said fellow police officers.

Praveen and Ekambaram were ‘suspended’ from the DMK when the matter sparked a stir.

Police scrutinized the ‘CCTV’ footage of the public meeting. It was reported that both of them sexually harassed the woman to the police.

Subsequently, a case was registered under the Prevention of Government Servant and Violence against Women Act and both were arrested yesterday.
