Chennai: 2 DMK members were arrested for sexually assaulting a female policeman who was on security duty in Chennai. Also, both of them were suspended from the party.

In this case, DMK youth workers S. Praveen (23) of Saligramam Mathiyalagan Nagar and C. Akambaram (24) of Virugampakkam Chinmaya Nagar sexually assaulted a 22-year-old woman guard who was working on security duty there.

Shocked by this, the female guard started crying. The fellow policemen there have heard this. Virugambakkam Police Inspector Thomson Xavier, who came there, caught the two men who had violated the lady constable and tried to take them to the police station.

The DMK officials who were there at that time stopped the police and engaged in an argument. MLA Prabhakara Raja, who came down from the stage at that time, asked not to make the issue bigger. Subsequently, the police did not take any action against the two concerned and sent them away from there.

The issue went viral on social media. Also, the police department and the Tamil Nadu government were also condemned from various quarters.

Subsequently, Praveen and Ekambaram were produced in the presence of Koyambedu Deputy Commissioner of Police Kumar. At that time, they wrote a letter saying that they were unknowingly caught in the crowd and did not do it intentionally, and they apologized to the policewoman for this. It was informed by the police that the woman constable also wrote that no further action was required on her complaint and both parties went amicably.

This action of the police was criticized again. Subsequently, Police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal ordered to take appropriate action.

Later, the Virugampakkam police registered a case against Praveen and Ekambaram, who were the subject of the complaint, under 3 sections of preventing a government employee from working, sexual assault and the Prevention of Violence against Women Act.

Subsequently, both of them were produced overnight at the Saidapet Magistrate’s house and remanded in judicial custody.

Meanwhile, in a statement issued by DMK General Secretary Duraimurugan, “S. Praveen and C. Ekambaram of Chennai South District, Kalayan Nagar North, 129th Ward, have been temporarily removed from all responsibilities, including basic membership, for defying party control and bringing disrepute to the party.” He said.
