The National Minority Commission will look into the central government’s cancellation of Maulana Azad Fellowship for minority students. But the commission is of the view that the pre-matric scholarship should not be resumed. The commission chairman told Manorama News that it will ensure that the educational rights of the minority groups are not denied.

The central government’s cancellation of the pre-matric scholarship for students of classes 1 to 8 and the Maulana Azad fellowship for higher education has led to much protest. The president of the National Minority Commission explains that the abolition of pre-matric scholarship is to guarantee free education as part of the Right to Education Act.

The government’s argument is that Maulana Azad Fellowship was abolished by mixing with various fellowships. But the Minority Commission has said that it will look into the matter. It will ensure that the deserving get the benefits. The chairman also informed that a two-member committee has been formed for this purpose. The Chairman stated that the report of the committee will be discussed in the next meeting of the Minority Commission and a decision will be taken.
