A complete mess in the House of Representatives: Republicans are putting sticks in the wheels

For the first time in a century, the party holding the majority fails to decide who will serve as Speaker, with Kevin McCarthy failing to vote for the sixth time in a row

The saga has been going on for two days now, with a sixth consecutive failed vote as a specific group of Republicans refuses to change their vote and unite with the rest of the party behind one candidate to finally win control of the House.

This is the first time in at least a hundred years that the candidate for chairman was not elected in the first ballot.

The chain of votes began on Tuesday, when 21 members of the Republican Party voted three times in a row to appoint Byron Donald as Speaker of the House of Representatives. On Wednesday, another election was held, which also failed and did not produce any results.

After Wednesday night’s sixth vote, in which McCarthy received just 201 of the 218 votes he needed to win the speakership, the House decided to postpone the next vote until Thursday afternoon, giving Republicans more time to discuss with their colleagues and try to reach a resolution. .

It should be noted that all 212 Democrats voted in favor of appointing their leader, Hakeem Jeffries of New York, as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The chaos is shaking Republicans, raising questions about how the party will manage to govern for the next two years if its members can’t even agree on who will lead them.

Meanwhile, without a new speaker, newly elected members of Congress can’t be sworn in, and Republicans, who won control of the House by a slim majority, can’t begin work on the agenda they want to advance.

Former President Donald Trump issued a message to party members and called on them to unite: “Republican, don’t turn our great victory into a huge, embarrassing defeat. It’s time to celebrate, we deserve it! Kevin McCarthy will do a good job, maybe even a great job – just watch it.”

Among the party members who insist on voting against McCarthy are Lauren Bobert from Colorado, Andy Biggs from Arizona, Anna Paulina Luna from Florida, Ralph Norman from South Carolina, Scott Perry from Pennsylvania, Chip Roy from Texas and more.
