To get an idea of the current Covid situation in China, students at Tsinghua University in Beijing used a special method: they counted the deaths of their professors in the past few days. Of the 1,831 teachers, 16 have recently passed away. Others include corporate and celebrity obituaries. Whether they died of or with Covid or something else entirely is not known. The government no longer publishes death and infection figures. And so millions of Chinese are currently poking around in the dark, while doctor’s offices and hospitals are overcrowded at the same time. Even antipyretic ibuprofen is currently difficult to obtain, they say.
