Synthetic tissue restores an erection to pigs with penile injuries

The researchers also conducted experiments to investigate the potential toxicity and blood compatibility of the artificial tissue, as it is intended to remain in the body for a long time. They determined that ATA would not harm other tissues.

They then tested ATA on Bama miniature pigs with injuries to their tunica albuginea. They found that the artificial tissue patches restored erectile function to a level similar to that of normal penile tissue, suggesting that the patch was able to successfully replace the function of the natural tissue.

“We were surprised by the results of the animal tests, where the penis returned to a normal erection immediately after using the synthetic tissue,” said Shi.

The scientists also checked the effect of the surgery after a month and found that while the artificial tissue did not restore the microstructure of the surrounding natural tissue, it developed fibrosis – an increase in connective tissue – similar to that found in normal tissue and that it was capable of a normal erection after the penis was injected with saline solution.

“The results one month after the procedure showed that the ATA team achieved a good, if not perfect, result,” said Shi.
