Decision to demolish 2 flyovers in Chennai for metro rail tunnel – to be rebuilt after 4 years | Decision to demolish 2 flyovers in Chennai for metro rail tunnel

In order to reduce the traffic congestion in the city of Chennai, Metro Rail works are being carried out on 3 lines for a distance of 118.9 km in the 2nd phase.

It has been announced that the works for the 45.8 km distance from Madhavaram to Sirucheri Chipgat will be completed by 2026.

There are 50 railway stations on this route. In this route, a tunnel is constructed from Greenways Road across the Adyar River towards the Adyar Depot.

The flyover at Chennai Adyar junction and the flyover at Radhakrishnan Road-Rayapetta junction are to be demolished for tunneling on this metro rail line.

Both these flyovers are to be rebuilt after 4 years. A two-lane flyover is to be constructed adjacent to the existing bridge so that traffic is not affected before the bridge demolition work begins at the Adyar junction.

Once this two-lane flyover is completed, the existing bridge will be demolished. Once the tunneling work is completed, the demolished bridge will be rebuilt as a two-lane bridge at the same location.

Through this, a 4-lane flyover will be constructed at the Adyar junction. The construction works will start next year. The flyover is being constructed to connect Adyar with Besantnagar and Thiruvanmiyur.

Only 50 percent of the flyover at Radhakrishnan Road-Rayapetta junction is to be demolished. The demolished area will be rebuilt when the metro work is completed.

The traffic police have decided to divert the traffic after the bridge is demolished.

A Metro Rail official said:-

Initially, it was planned to demolish a portion of the flyover connecting Adyar with Thiruvanmiyur and construct a temporary steel bridge. Creating and removing a temporary bridge is of no benefit. Because it costs more like concrete construction.

So, we are planning to build a new flyover parallel to it. 2 dual carriageway flyovers are being constructed in Adyar area by Metro Rail Corporation.

This is what he said.
