“It was very powerful”… A tornado crosses this town near Rennes

“Everything happened very quickly, in less than a minute”… This Monday morning, the telephone of the mayor of Saint-Sulpice-la-Forêt did not have time to rest. In the aftermath of the tornado which crossed his town, Yann Huaumé is in contact with the prefecture, the experts, its technical services and the insurance companies. The objective: to intervene as quickly as possible to show the damage caused by the violent winds which blew on Sunday. It was a little after 2 p.m. when a tornado crossed this town located northeast of Rennes. “I was called by residents who had seen the phenomenon. They saw shifting winds and flying objects,” said the mayor, joined by 20 Minutes.

The objects in question – sheets and slates – were thrown into the air by the violence of the phenomenon. “It was very fast, but very powerful. Fortunately, we have no injuries, ”congratulates the mayor. Residents who witnessed the incident quickly realized what they had to do and took shelter. On Sunday, the department of Ille-et-Vilaine, like all of Brittany, had been placed on yellow alert for storms and strong winds. But no one in Saint-Sulpice imagined facing such a phenomenon.

A heavily damaged listed barn

From south to north, the tornado roamed the main street of the town and caused some damage in its path. Half of the roof and the frame of a barn classified as a heritage of local interest was torn off. Several sheds were also blown up and reduced to nothing. Several houses have seen part of their roof fly off under the force of the swirling winds. A roofer agreed to intervene on Sunday afternoon to cover the pavilions most damaged by the tornado. No relocation was necessary.
