According to the suspicion, the Ashdod resident who was arrested provided Roni Levy, the suspect in the murder, with a hiding place after the murder was committed and made sure to bring him equipment. His detention was extended by four days

The Magistrate’s Court in Rishon Lezion yesterday extended by 4 days the arrest of the resident of Ashdod who is suspected of helping Roni Levy (59) – the main suspect in the murder of the contractor Nissim Assig last Thursday in Israel. According to the suspicion, he provided Levy with a hiding place after the murder and made sure to bring him equipment.

Levy, a relative of the murdered man, was captured in the parking lot of the residence of the suspect’s mother-in-law from Ashdod. The court also extended the detention of another suspect, a resident of Rishon LeZion, who is also suspected of assisting Levy after the murder.

“There is a reasonable suspicion that the suspects committed the crimes attributed to them and there is still a fear of disrupting the investigation,” Judge Karin Vyshinsky noted in her decision. “Also, the two are not charged with committing crimes together.”

The lawyer Itai Ben Nun, who represents the suspect, said at the first hearing on the extension of his detention: “The suspicion is only assistance after the fact. It is not related to the act of murder. The suspect was arrested on Friday and the investigation could have ended already, but the investigating unit is procrastinating, so his detention was extended until Monday , under nine days of detention requested by the investigative unit.”

The police investigation revealed that Col. Bem’ Assig, 60 years old, arrived in Rishon Lezion in a taxi for a meeting with Roni Levy. When he got out of the taxi, he spoke with him briefly, then was shot at point blank range.

After the shooting, Assig ran back to the taxi, which drove him to a gas station on Maccabim Road, where he joined the MDA ambulance that evacuated him to Shamir Hospital, where the doctor was in serious condition. He was pronounced dead at the hospital a few hours later. Levy was arrested in Ashdod more than a day after the incident, and for the time being is silent in his investigation.
