Guwahati: India crushed the visitors by 67 runs in the first match of the ODI series against Sri Lanka. Virat Kohli’s century and captain Rohit Sharma’s innings of 83 runs helped India win without pressure. Despite the defeat, Dasan Shanaka, the Lankan skipper scored a century and fought till the last ball to concede defeat to the hosts. Along with India’s victory, fans are praising Rohit Sharma and the sportsman spirit of the Indian cricket team captain.

Shanaka scored his second ODI century by creating a 100-run partnership with the tail-ender. By the time the match reached its final overs, Lanka’s defeat was all but certain. But everyone was looking forward to the Lankan captain scoring a century.

When Mohammed Shami came to bowl the last over of the match, the Lankan skipper needed five more runs to reach his century. Shanaka scored three runs in the first two balls and had to hand over the fourth ball strike to his teammate. At the non-striker’s end, the Lankan skipper needed just two runs for his century. By the time Shami came to bowl the third ball of the last over, Shanaka had left the crease. Immediately, the Indian pacer ran out the Lankan skipper. Umpire Nitin Menen left it to the third umpire for inspection.

But in the meantime Indian captain Rohit Sharma intervened and withdrew Shami’s appeal. After talking to Shami, Rohit approached the umpire and asked him to withdraw the appeal. Then Kason Rajith, facing the fourth ball, hit a single and handed over the strike to the Lankan skipper. Shanaka scored a century in the match by hitting a four in five balls. Then the Lankan skipper ended the match with a six off the last ball.

With the win, India took a 1-0 lead in the series. India have a three-match series against Lanka. The second match is at Eden Gardens on the 12th. The final match of the series will be played on the 15th at Kariyavattam Greenfield Stadium.
