More light hours? A bill to shorten the winter clock will be submitted to the Knesset for approval

by time news

Minister of the Interior, Ayelet Shaked, Announced tonight (Saturday) during the “Meet the Press” program on Channel 12 a decision to shorten the winter time by about three weeks.

In response to the decision, Minister Shaked said that “shortening the winter clock will save costs for the economy and will not harm the students and the worshiping public. In doing so, Israel is in fact adapting itself to driving in the United States, where the clock is also moved in early March.” In addition, she said that the proposal will be submitted to the Knesset for approval in the coming month.

Last month, MKs Ali Salala, Michal Rosin, Musi Raz and Gabi Laski submitted a bill to abolish winter time starting next year. The essence of the bill is to put Israel in line with many countries that have decided to abolish winter time in order to increase energy and electricity savings, reduction in road accidents, road lighting, streets and an entire country.

According to the bill, in most Asian, African and South American countries there is no transition between winter and summer time for many years. There is no reason to darken a sunny country like Israel. It was also noted that daylight saving time allows Israeli citizens more leisure time at the end of the day – something that has been proven to contribute to the mood and mental health of many.

Winter time in Israel currently ends between the Friday before the last Sunday of March at 02:00, similar to Europe. On the other hand, in the United States and Canada (excluding Arizona, Hawaii, Saskatchewan, and a number of other regions) the clock ends on the second Sunday of that month.
