Anti-government protests: 17 more killed in Peru

In the western South American country of Peru, 17 people were killed during a protest by supporters of former President Pedro Castillo against the government.

In the election held in 2021, Castillo, who adopted left-wing policies unexpectedly won and ruled. Peru’s first president who broke his promise to work was impeached twice by the right-wing to topple his government. However, Pedro Castillo escaped from them.

In this situation, he ordered the dissolution of Parliament on the 7th of last month in order to avoid the disqualification decision brought for the 3rd time and to continue ruling the country through decree.

However, the opposition parties thwarted his efforts and disqualified Pedro Castillo in Parliament.

Following that, Tina Poluwarde was sworn in as the country’s first woman president. Also, Pedro Castillo was arrested for his involvement in the riot.

Castillo’s supporters are protesting against this and insisting that the election be rerun. Right-wing organizations are also protesting against them.

So far 28 people have been killed in these incidents. Meanwhile, one side tried to take over the Juliaca city airport during Monday’s protest. 17 people were killed in the clash between them and the security forces.

With this, the number of victims of the recent political protests in Peru has risen to 39.
