Sirisena fined Rs 2.23 crore in Easter attack case: Supreme Court of Sri Lanka orders action

Colombo: The Supreme Court has imposed a fine of Rs 2.23 crore on former President Sirisena for failing to prevent the Easter Day bombings in Sri Lanka. On April 21, Easter Day 2019, suicide attacks were carried out at various places in Sri Lanka. 277 people died in the attack in 8 places. Various cases were registered in the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka regarding this. In particular, a case was filed against high officials, including the then President Maithripala Sirisena, who warned the intelligence agencies and prevented the blast. A bench of 7 judges headed by the Chief Justice of the Sri Lankan Supreme Court Jayant Jayasuriya gave a verdict yesterday.

A fine of Rs 2.23 crore has been imposed on Sri Lanka’s former President Sirisena. Also, Sri Lanka’s former defense secretary Hemasiri Fernando has been fined Rs 1.12 crore, former police director Pujith Jayasundara, former director of the intelligence agency Nilantha Jayawardena has been fined Rs 1.68 crore each. Former Director of National Intelligence Sisira Mendez ordered to pay Rs 23 lakh each to all the victims. The court directed that everyone should pay this penalty from their own money.
