London: Hugs and handshakes have been banned in UK high schools to prevent romance between students. At Highlands School in Chelmsford, it has been decided that from now on students should not even shake hands.
The Daily Mail reported that school authorities had sent a letter to parents saying they were going to ban all physical contact between students. It is also informed that such a decision is made keeping in mind the safety of your child. Anything can happen if someone touches your child, with or without their consent. The letter also mentions that some touch the body without consent, sometimes leading to physical injury.
The use of mobile phones is also prohibited on school campuses. If children are noticed coming to school with mobile phones, they will be bought and locked. The actions of the school authorities have been widely criticized.
Parents also objected to the school’s strict rule. A parent responded that no one had discussed the new rule until the letter was sent and this is a decision that should be taken after consulting the students. Another parent responded that instead of educating children about healthy relationships, it is ridiculous that such laws are being introduced these days.
