RS Mangalam : Saptha Kanni Pongal festival was held in Morpannai village of Ramanathapuram district as a thank you to the Mother of the Sea.

Saptha Kanni Pongal festival is held every year in Morpannai fishing village near RS Mangalam on Pongal festival to celebrate the prosperity of the sea, the livelihood of the fishermen and to thank the mother of the sea. According to this, the festival was held on behalf of the villagers yesterday ahead of Pongal.

On this occasion, a week ago, seven girls were selected on behalf of the villagers and they were taught the practices of Pongal. Subsequently, yesterday, on behalf of the villagers, Pongal was kept in separate pots in front of the Rana Pathirakaliamman temple by seven girls dressed as Saptha Kanni.

Puja was continued at the temple and in a small boat made by the villagers, they lit a lamp with puja items and worshiped in front of the temple. The Saptha maidens took a karagam to carry the idol of the village head of the pond and went in a procession through the main streets to the sea and worshiped by placing the puja items in the pond.
