David Carrick has confessed to 48 rapes of at least twelve women. But there could be more than a thousand agents involved in sexual or domestic violence cases.

FROM OUR LONDON CORRESPONDENT It’s a stain on Scotland Yard that will be hard to erase: why one of the worst serial rapists in British history turned out to be an officer in the London Police’s elite unit, in charge of the protection of diplomats and parliamentarians. David Carrick, this is the name of the monster, has been carrying on for two decades a campaign of violence and terror against dozens of women: yesterday he admitted in court 48 rapes against at least 12 victims – although investigators think there are many more – for a total of 85 serious sexual offences.

But what’s worse, if possible, is that nine times over the years Scotland Yard had been warned of incidents related to Carrick: but they never did anything. “We have failed – admitted the chief of police, Sir Mark Rowley. I’m sorry: he shouldn’t have been a cop. We failed as investigators because we had to connect the dots about his repeated misogyny over the course of two decades. And as leaders we should have been more determined to root out such a misogynist.” From Downing Street they say that trust in Scotland Yard is “in shattered”.

Carrick made himself strong in his role as a policeman to put potential victims at ease, often contacted on dating sites, and then threaten them by saying that no one would believe them. The Guardian he obtained testimony from a woman, who recounted how the officer had it threatened with death saying “I can kill you without leaving evidence” and warning her that he might plant drugs in her car.

The serial rapist was a sadist who enjoyed humiliating women, handcuffing them, forcing them to remain naked for hours, insulting them, calling them “slaves” and even urinating on them. Now he finally risks a long prison sentence, which will be decided in early February.

But the real problem is that all of Scotland Yard looks rotten: the police have admitted they are overhauling 1,633 cases of sexual offenses or domestic violence involving 1071 officers in the last ten years. As Vera Baird, former Victims Commissioner for England and Wales, said, ‘London police seem incapable of not employing some people who are bad enough’. And of course the case of Sarah Everard, attacked and killed two years ago in a London park by another officer. Just as they have come to light several times in recent times misogynistic, homophobic or racist behavior by active duty police officers.

“The police have to deal with the failures of this case – Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said this morning during the cabinet meeting – restore public trust and do everything possible to ensure the safety of women and girls.
