A rare syndrome in a 12-year-old: scaly skin like a snake

by time news

A 12-year-old from India was born with scaly facial skin like a snake. The boy from the state of Kerala, India, has suffered from lamellar ichthyosis since birth and is the only family member who suffers from it. His skin grows too fast, dries up and then sloughs off like a snake

A 12-year-old boy is dealing with snake-like scaly skin due to a rare medical condition. The boy suffers from ichthyosis which affects only one in every 300,000 children. The disease is also known as “dry skin”. In most cases, the signs of the disease appear at birth or near the time of birth. It exists in adults, where the disease is accompanied by malignant tumors.

Although he looks different from other children in his hometown, the boy named Namith is said to be an enthusiastic student who practices both karate and singing. Namith is also “a happy boy who is a source of inspiration to many people,” according to his father.

The father said Smith faces many daily problems because of his condition, but he feels very proud of his son. Namith’s father said there is no cure for his condition. Smith has a younger brother who does not have a skin disease.

In 2020, a boy with the same predicament was reported in India after he was nicknamed the ‘human snake’ – because a rare condition causes him to shed his skin every month. The boy had a rare genetic skin condition that causes the skin to grow too fast, dry out and shed, similar to that of a snake. It is so severe that his skin falls off every four to six weeks. He had to shower every hour and apply moisturizer every three hours to try to relieve the symptoms.
