AGES data: Vaccination protects 95 percent from hospital

by time news

Scientific studies have long since proven the high protection rates of the Covid-19 vaccine. But for the first time in Austria, AGES epidemiologists have now succeeded in proving the effectiveness of vaccination in preventing serious diseases in daily practice.

The Covid-19 vaccination protects around 95 percent against being admitted to hospital after SARS-CoV-2 infection, said AGES expert Daniela Schmid yesterday evening at an online medical training course.

Almost only infections with delta variants

For the first time, according to the infection epidemiologist, it was possible to link disease, vaccination and hospital data relating to Covid-19 for the two federal states of Vienna and Vorarlberg.

This took place for the period from calendar weeks 27 to 35 (July 5 to September 5) 2021. In the observed and evaluated period, the delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 was de facto for all infections with the Covid-19 pathogens responsible.

The results speak – outside of scientific studies and thus as “real-world data” – vehemently in favor of vaccination across all age groups: Overall, the vaccines in the age group of 18 to 59 year olds protected completely immunized compared to 95 people who were not vaccinated .53 percent had such a severe course of the infection that they had to be admitted to the hospital.

Johnson & Johnson is lagging behind

The protection rates for AstraZeneca, Pfizer Biontech and Moderna vaccines were extremely high at more than 94 percent to almost 99 percent. The Janssen vaccine (Johnson & Johnson; single vaccination) was slightly lower in this age group at around 84 percent.

The protection rates against serious disease progression were similarly high among those over 60 in Vienna and Vorarlberg: 94.18 percent for all those who were fully vaccinated compared to those who were not vaccinated (AstraZeneca, Pfizer Biontech and Moderna vaccines: between 93 and 99 percent) . Here, too, the effect of the fourth vaccine (Janssen / J & J) was somewhat weaker with a vaccination of around 86 percent.
