The number of unemployed in Germany in November decreased compared to October by 60 thousand people and reached 2,317,000. This is evidenced by data released on Tuesday, November 30, by the Federal Labor Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit, BA), whose headquarters is located in Nuremberg. At the same time, compared with November 2020, the decrease was 382 thousand.

The unemployment rate fell by 0.1 percentage points – to 5.1 percent (in October – 5.2 percent), which is 0.8 percentage points lower than in November 2020.

As the agency dpa clarifies, when compiling the November statistics, BA took into account the data received before November 11. Thus, the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic had little or no impact on the labor market.

“The consequences of the alarming situation with the coronavirus are still barely noticeable”

The recovery, recorded in the previous several months, continues. “The implications of the current, alarming situation with the coronavirus in Germany are still barely noticeable,” said Detlef Scheele, chairman of the agency’s board.

Current circumstances – so far on a small scale – are reflected only in the area of underemployment. Between 1 and 24 November, about 104,000 new notifications were received. This is 10 thousand more than BA recorded in October. The increase affected mainly the manufacturing industry, which faced a shortage of components and materials due to the pandemic, as well as the hotel and restaurant business. At the same time, 751 thousand people received payments from the agency in connection with the transfer to part-time employment. In April 2020 – at its peak – this figure was just under 6 million.

Lack of components and raw materials

On the eve of the Munich Institute for Economic Research ifo reported that 74.4 percent of companies surveyed in November complained about the shortage of intermediate products and raw materials, as well as problems with their procurement. This is four percentage points more than in October.
