“I just want to go home”. These were the last words of Tire Nichols, the 29-year-old African American killed in a beating by five Memphis police officers last January 7. This is what appears in the four-minute video released in the past few hours and which shows Nichols in trouble after being stopped by the agents so much that he has phoned his mother several times.
”Damn it, I didn’t do anything”, the African-American said to the agents who, as shown in the video, hit him with kicks and punches. He will die of internal bleeding three days later in hospital. The footage also shows how the man didn’t react to the policemen, but only tried to escape, only to be chased and caught by the officers.
According to the Washington Post after analyzing the video, Nichols waited for the ambulance to arrive for 22 minutes. In the images we see the man on the ground for a long time before being transported to the nearest hospital. It is here that the 29-year-old will die for three days.
