Singampunari,–Farmers are unhappy because of the interference of the ruling party in the Singampunari paddy procurement centre.

As paddy harvesting has started in Sivagangai district, procurement centers have been opened at 27 places including Singampunari.

Last year, when the center was functioning at the Singampunari Agribusiness Regulation Hall, there was a controversy when some of the ruling party charged farmers Rs 60 to 80 per bag. Farmers are lamenting that the ruling party is interfering in the procurement of paddy this year as well.

They have complained that they are negotiating for a commission of up to 40 rupees per 40 kg bag. Meanwhile, a week after the opening of the procurement center, the paddy brought by many farmers has not been procured.

Senthil, farmer, Kumaripatti: The cooperative society complex where the purchase center is opened is open without fences, so there is a risk of cows damaging the paddy bags. Farmers are keeping vigil day and night.

I brought six and a half acres of paddy, approval has been given for only two and a half acres. The rest are pending approval. A commission of Rs.40 per bag is not acceptable. You can pay up to Rs.20 as wages. He said that paddy harvested after hard work cannot be given as commission.
