Unmarried people are legally allowed to have children in China.
China’s birth rate has continued to decline in recent years. And there the death rate is increasing more than the birth rate. As a result, China’s population has fallen to the lowest level in 60 years.
To increase the birth rate
So the Chinese government is taking various measures to increase the birth rate in the country. In 2016, the government relaxed the one-child policy that had been in place for many years. Also, the country has allowed couples to have 3 children since last year.
However, China’s birth rate is falling. In this situation, the provincial government has given permission for unmarried people to have children legally in the southwestern province of Sichuan. Through this, benefits, subsidies etc. which are given only to married couples for having children will be available to unmarried couples.
The new rules will come into effect from the 15th
Officials said that these new regulations will come into force from the 15th and married and unmarried people can have as many children as they want.
They said the move comes as marriage and birth rates in the province have fallen sharply in recent years.
Sichuan is China’s 5th most populous province and ranks 7th in China with over 21% of the population aged over 60.
