The Donostia Film Festival repeats this year as the fourth activity or cultural institution with the greatest projection of those held in Spain, after the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofía and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, all three in Madrid. San Sebastián is the seventh city in the ranking of cultural cities and the Basque Country falls to third place in the autonomous communities, after Madrid and Catalonia.

These are some of the conclusions of the Contemporary Foundation in its annual Observatory of Culture, which is carried out in consultation with more than 400 professionals from the sector from all over the country and which each year establishes a ranking that was revealed yesterday.

In the case of the cities Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia complete the podium, followed by Bilbao, Malaga and Seville, with Donostia in seventh place, the same one it occupied last year.

In terms of institutions and activities, the Prado Museum is at the top of the list for its best cultural offer, followed by the Reina Sofía Museum and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. The first ten places are completed by the San Sebastian Festival, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Teatro Real, CaixaForum, Matadero Madrid, the Malaga Film Festival and the IVAM in Valencia. Tabakalera progresses from position 42 to 40.

San Telmo and Jazzaldia

The Observatory of Culture also presents rankings with the best of the cultural year in each of the autonomous communities. In the Basque Country, the Zinemaldia is the most voted, followed by the Guggenheim, the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum and the Azkuna Zentroa in the Biscayan capital. The San Telmo de Donostia museum, with special reference to the exhibition dedicated to Chillida and Oteiza, occupies fifth position. Also included in the ‘top’ of Basque cultural events is Jazzaldia, tied with Tabakalera, Chillida Leku and the San Sebastian Musical Fortnight.

Regarding the best of digital culture, Filmin once again leads the ranking, followed by Prado, Fundación Telefónica (Culture in Digital) and Fundación ‘la Caixa’.
