London’s Risky EU Exorcism | time.news

The British leadership wants to throw thousands of EU laws overboard. There is a lot of resistance to this – but the government absolutely wants to be able to show that Brexit has been successful.

It’s been three years since Great Britain left the European Union, when Boris Johnson spoke of a “moment of national renewal”. Today, the British economy is struggling with staff shortages due to Brexit, companies are complaining about additional bureaucracy, and investors are turning their backs on Great Britain. And more and more Britons are coming to believe that Brexit was a grave mistake. Polls show that a majority of Britons are now even in favor of re-entry.

The British government under the new Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, is all the more resolutely clinging to the belief that Brexit will ultimately lead to an upturn – and it is doing everything it can to convince the population of the benefits of leaving the EU in 2020. This is where the bill with the clumsy name “Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) Template 2022” comes into play.

The purpose of the bill is to review all the laws and regulations that Britain has adopted in its 47 years as a member of the EU. Those that you want to keep will be transposed into British law – and the rest thrown overboard. The declared goal is to use the “Brexit freedoms” and to promote the “unique culture of innovation” in Great Britain. The laws cover countless areas, from consumer rights and bankruptcy law to equal pay and environmental protection.
