Austria’s green and liberal EU mandaters abstained from a resolution calling on the Union to supply new heavy weapons.

Brussels. In terms of ideology, they are usually very far apart. But on the question of whether the EU should supply the Ukrainian armed forces with heavy weapons, primarily combat aircraft and long-range missiles, as is currently being debated, the Austrian MEPs from the Greens and the FPÖ are unanimous: they reject it.

And because this demand for increased military support of the Ukrainian defense against the Russian invaders appears in a resolution of the European Parliament, the green and blue EU mandataries abstained on Thursday during the plenary session in Brussels. “In our opinion, the European Parliament’s resolution on the Ukraine summit has good and bad approaches,” said a spokesman for the FP parliamentary group when asked by “Die Presse”. “We agree that further casualties in this war must be avoided and that this war must end quickly. However, we cannot agree to the demand for further arms supplies, including heavy weapons, to Ukraine and for the country to join the EU quickly.”
