He Punta Lucero deposit, in Zierbana (Bizkaia), was one of the most abundant known animal fossils from around half a million years ago. It was destroyed in the 1990s to extract limestone that was used to expand the port of Bilbao. The deposit was so rich that pieces extracted before its disappearance are still being studied today. We chatted with the paleontologist Asier Gomez Olivenciafrom Iberbasque at the University of the Basque Country, who is studying these remains and has just discovered several novelties.
