The Children’s Hospital of Guayaquil joins the fight against cancer

The Dr. Francisco de Icaza Bustamante Children’s Hospital (HFIB) of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) joins the commemoration of February 4 for the World Day of the Fight against Cancer. This year is framed under the motto “For fairer care”.

Currently, the Children’s Hospital cares for 448 children with cancer, who receive comprehensive care in the services of oncology, psychology, nutrition, social work, and depending on the case, palliative care.

The children of the HFIB, in addition to health care, receive emotional support with playful activities, focused on creating a more humane and empathetic environment with their clinical situation.

Every month, the oncology service of the health home celebrates an event called “The ringing of the bell”, a tradition that shows that the children have successfully completed their treatment. With an emotional ceremony, the children share with their attending physician and their relatives climbing three steps that mean: faith, strength and hope; then with victory bells they manifest that their fight against the disease is entering a stage of remission, that is, of periodic controls.

“This fight is less burdensome at the hands of doctors, nurses and general staff, which makes us feel that we can trust the recovery of our children. We can spend weeks here, due to the state of our children, however, we feel cared for,” said Jennifer, mother of one of the beneficiaries of the HFIB oncology service.

The Children’s Hospital has witnessed the ringing of the bell for 111 children to date. In this sense, we make a call to unite voices so that patients receive more and more fair care and thus act in their favor.
