Is the Central Asian model of coexistence faltering? Secessionism and interethnic conflicts.- Antonio Alonso Marcos

From a neorealist perspective, the author analyzes the role played by the identity and multi-ethnic diversity of the Central Asian countries in the regional system. The Central Asian model of coexistence, the result of centuries of racial mixing, was used by Moscow as an instrument of division and control in these countries. However, since the 1990s it has been used as a cohesion tool by the newly independent republics. Finally, Beijing, through the SCO, has used it as an excuse to attract the attention and obtain the approval of these territories. To what extent can Central Asian models of inter-ethnic tolerance be said to be successful? Are the conflicts that have arisen endogenous or are they exacerbated from outside as part of the Great Game?
