If the US reaches -79°C, it will be the lowest recorded temperature in the Northern Hemisphere.

Here are the lowest temperatures ever recorded in the world:

  • Antártica, Estacion Vostok – Located close to the South Pole, it has average temperatures of minus 56 degrees. The lowest occurred on July 21, 1983, with thermometers reading -89.2°C.

  • Russia, Siberia – In the Russian region of Yakutia, Siberia, the village of Oymyakon reached -71.2°C in 1926, the lowest temperature recorded in the Northern Hemisphere. The average in the region is minus 50 degrees.

  • Canada, Snag – In a village in the west, the thermometers read -63°C, caused by the cold air of the Pacific Ocean. The record happened in 1947.
