Istanbul: The historic Gaziantep Castle, which stood tall for 2,000 years in the city of Gaziantep in Turkey, was also destroyed by the earthquake. Turkish officials said the Hittite-built fortress was severely damaged in the disaster. Gaziantep Castle, located on a hill in southeastern Turkey, attracts tens of thousands of tourists every year.

The eastern and southern parts of the fort have suffered considerable damage. The remains of the fort were scattered on the road below and the surrounding ironwork on the footpaths. The retaining wall was also broken. There are cracks in the walls. At the same time, the eastern wall and dome of the Sirvani mosque near the fort, built in the 17th century, partially collapsed.

Built as a watch tower Gaziantep KasiLin was developed as a fort by the Roman Empire in the 2nd century CE. Since then, many renovation works have been done in the fort. The fort reached its present state during the reign of Justinian, the Byzantine emperor who lived between 527-565 CE.
