The new president of the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), Aloizio Mercadante, said this Monday, 6th, in his inauguration speech at the development institution, that the focus on the “reindustrialization” of the economy, already placed by him as one of the objectives of his administration, will mean supporting a “new industry”, innovative and “decarbonised”.

When mentioning the “challenge of “reindustrialization”, Mercadante stated that “it is not about the old industry. “It is about the new industry: digital, decarbonized, based on circularity and, therefore, intensive in knowledge. This new industry will require innovation and large investments in applied research”, said the new president of BNDES.

According to Mercadante, industry participation in BNDES disbursements was 56% of the total, in 2006, and dropped to 16%, in 2021. “We have to revert this, this cannot go on”, stated the BNDES president.

When mentioning the appointment of Rafael Lucchesi, director of the National Confederation of Industry (CNI), as president of the Board of Directors of the BNDES, Mercadante emphasized that his objective is “to place the industry at the top of the strategic actions of the BNDES”.

The new president of the bank took the opportunity to announce that the former minister of Foreign Affairs and current special advisor to the Presidency for international affairs, Celso Amorim, and Clemente Ganz, who was director of the Inter-union Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies (Dieese), will be appointed as members of the Board of Directors.

Mercadante took the opportunity to emphasize the new emphasis on sustainability. “There will be no future if we do not preserve the Amazon and other biomes”, stated the new president of the BNDES, addressing the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva, who was in the audience at the inauguration ceremony.
