Malappuram: The enforcement wing of the motor vehicle department has imposed fines on the dealers who tampered with the odometer of unregistered bikes. The MVD imposed a fine of Rs 1.03 lakh for riding a bike with the odometer cable disconnected. The incident took place while riding a bike from Kottakal to Kozhikode showroom. The vehicle was seized by the officials conducting vehicle inspection on National Highway Kakadu.

When the officials drove the bike, they found the odometer disconnected. The vehicle had no documents including other certificates. The fine was imposed on the basis of these reasons. Motor Vehicle Inspector P.K. Under the leadership of Mohammad Shafiq, AMVIs K.R. Harilal, P. Boney conducted the inspection. Three months ago, two bikes and six months ago, a car were similarly fined by the enforcement department.

The invention is done so that the mileage is not shown on the meter while the new vehicle is being used for purposes such as test drive, taking it for exhibition, transfer to another showroom and for personal purposes. The law provides for a penalty of Rs 1 lakh on dealers who mislead consumers into selling vehicles that are not running properly.
