Suriname HEARTS Initiative requires patient commitment – Suriname Herald

by time news

Within the Suriname HEARTS Initiative, a project to significantly reduce cardiovascular disease, it is important that all parties take their responsibility. The most important party in this is the patient who is responsible for his own health. This responsibility includes compliance, a healthy lifestyle and a commitment to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Adherence to therapy is the extent to which the patient follows the prescribed treatment and appointments made by the practitioner. Reduced compliance can lead to an increased risk of disease, complications, mortality and higher healthcare costs. Based on data, it can be noted that 56.6 percent of patients with elevated blood pressure do not return on the agreed day and time.

In those who did keep their appointment for a follow-up check, 65.2 percent had a blood pressure that was under control (below 140/90 or lower than 130/80 in diabetics and other diseases). A healthy lifestyle, with moderate or high intensity exercise, is also very important. Combinations of moderate and intensive exercise are also possible. In addition, healthy food is a prerequisite.

According to the Ministry of Health, it is important that everyone takes their responsibility. The patient takes responsibility for adhering to the use of the medication and the agreements with the practitioner. The practitioners must take their responsibility to provide the patients with the necessary care in accordance with the Suriname HEARTS Initiative protocol.

The ministry takes its responsibility by ensuring that the right medication is available and that people can receive the care recommended by WHO/PAHO.
