München – Karli Veit (77), master yodeler from Munich, guards an old, autographed record like a treasure.
She’s proof that he’s not a braggart, that the story he’s telling is true.
It’s a record from the 70’s by Marianne & Michael. Marianne wrote on it at the time: “In memory of our intermediary Karli Veit”.
What nobody knows: Karli set the two up!
Without him, Marianne & Michael would not exist as a duo or as a married couple. BILD found the yodeler, who now lives with his wife Bärbel on Lake Ammer.
“Michi and I performed as yodelers in the Munich Platzl in the 70s,” says Karli. “At that time he was still on the program as Adolf Hartl.”
Karli’s wife Bärbel remembers: “For a while he lived in a room above the Platzl.” At the time, the Platzl was a legendary Munich folk music venue.
Bärbel: “Michi, as he called himself later, sat in our living room and pondered that he didn’t want to stay a Platzl yodeler forever. He dreams of a future as a funny singer in the style of Fredl Fesl, or as a duet with a partner. Then Karli remembered Marianne.”
Marianne was a tax assistant and danced and sang in the folk music group “Bayerisches Kleeblattl”, in which Karli also yodelled.
Karli: “I gave Michael her number, they made an appointment in front of the Platzl.”
Marianne Hartl (68) confirmed to BILD: “Mei, Karli, of course I remember him! He brought us together.” Michael had called her immediately, but Marianne didn’t respond immediately.
Marianne: “I’m not going to meet a complete stranger right away! He talked on the phone about a record that he would like to record as a duo. After the third call, we met in front of the Platzl at 5 p.m. on July 17.”
It was love at first sight, that evening they had kissed for the first time.
Marianne to BILD: “This year it will be 50 years that Michi and I are together. We owe that to Karli. We’ve lost touch, do you know how to reach him?”
PS: BILD was happy to help and passed on the phone number with Karli’s consent.
