Another “Sputnik moment” for the Pentagon: the Chinese have overtaken the United States in the number of ground positions for launching intercontinental missiles
Il Pentagon notified Congress in Washington that China has surpassed the United States in the number of land-based launchers of ICBMs.
The discovery of the spy balloon that flew over the base of the Montana ICBMs seems to have caused a new Sputnik moment (the shock caused in American psychology in 1957 by the launch into orbit of the first satellite by the Soviet Union).
The US Strategic Command warns that the Chinese have surpassed the United States in the number of ground locations for launching ICBMs.
Most sites for are still unarmed: they do not host any ICBMs (Intercontinental ballistic missiles), writes the American command in its report.
And the United States still has one clear superiority over the Chinese in the number of missiles ready-to-launch intercontinental warheads and nuclear warheads.
The US Strategic Command calculation also doesn’t include submarine-launched missiles (SLBMs) and long-range bombers, specialties in which America has an overwhelming advantage.
