The demonstration rally of the Tamil Rasu Party in Batticaloa started with garlanding of the statue of the founder of the Tamil Rasu Party, Father Selva.

Sri Lanka’s Independence Day has been declared as a day of celebration in the Tamil homeland, North East and a rally has been carried out from north to east.

Non-violent struggle

Based on that, the non-violent demonstration of the Tamil Republic Party in Batticaloa this morning started from the memorial of Father Selva and went up to the Kalladi Bridge in Batticaloa, where people gathered on both sides of the bridge and peacefully expressed their opposition to the Independence Day.

Although Sri Lanka gained independence from British colonialism in 1948, it remains an Independence Day for the majority community.
