Turkey: The death toll in earthquake-ravaged Turkey and Syria has crossed 12,000. The death toll rose after more bodies were recovered from the rubble on Wednesday. Aftershocks, heavy rains and snowfall continue to pose a challenge to rescue operations.

The World Health Organization is concerned that the death toll may exceed 20,000. The World Health Organization has stated that thousands of seriously injured people are suffering without treatment. 72 hours after the earthquake, many people are still trapped between concrete blocks. More than 10,000 people were trapped when the buildings fell to the ground with a loud noise. Not only humans but mute animals also bear the brunt of the tragedy.
The World Health Organization estimates that 2.3 crore people have been affected by the disaster in both countries. The rescue operation is being carried out in sub-zero temperatures and intermittent rain. Adverse weather has blocked access to medical aid, water and food to disaster areas. Despite the cries for help rising from the rubble, there is a lack of rescue equipment.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited the disaster areas amid public outrage over delayed rescue efforts in Turkey. Erdogan said that the scale of the disaster cannot be measured.
The Ministry of External Affairs has informed that 10 Indians stranded in the disaster affected area are safe. The Ministry of External Affairs also stated that an investigation is underway for the Bengaluru native who went missing for business purposes.
At the same time, India continues to lend its hand in the rescue operations in earthquake-ravaged Turkey. As part of Operation Dost, 7 aircraft of the Air Force flew to the disaster-affected areas. More than 150 rescue workers and more than 100 health workers are active in relief operations.
