Kozhikode: Next CBSE Navodaya Assistant Commissioner’s suggestion that the teachers should write down that they will ensure 100 percent success in board 10th and 12th exams is controversial. From the regional office in Hyderabad, Assistant Commissioner K.V. In the name of Subbareddy, he came to circular schools the other day. It has also been informed that the signatures obtained from the teachers will be sent to the central office in Delhi.

The general guideline is that every student should get at least 80 percent marks (bench mark). Authorities point out that many schools do not achieve 100 percent success with the benchmark. The circular was issued based on the assessment of the students’ academic performance in the last two pre-board examinations. Normally, if the benchmark set by Navodaya is not achieved, the reason is sought from the teachers. The teachers say that this is the first time that they have been asked to provide a written guarantee.

Educators point out that it is unscientific to measure the entire class of children by a uniform benchmark. They also ask how the teachers can guarantee in advance that the results will be correct in the subjects to be studied and written. All India Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti Staff Association (ANVSSA) Kerala Chapter President P. said that the exam result mostly depends on the student’s effort and the teacher’s role in it is limited. Ramdas said.

All the 14 Navodaya Vidyalayas in Kerala are under the Hyderabad Region. Here there are up to ten students who have studied in their mother tongue. 65% marks in science subjects and pass marks in humanities subjects are the minimum qualification to get admission in Navodaya. There are students from many other schools who have studied in mother tongue till class 10th. Many are average achievers in their studies and are appearing for the board exams for the first time.

Teachers say that setting the same benchmark for all students will increase the pressure on them while they adjust to the new learning environment.

A.N.V.S.A. has demanded the withdrawal of the controversial circular which is putting pressure on teachers and students alike. A complaint was filed with the commissioner on Wednesday.
